Post Placement/Post Adoption Services
The post-placement report process usually consists of a visit to the home, and an assessment of the family's adjustment by a qualified social worker. This is also a time for the social worker to answer any questions or concerns the family may have.
Each country has specific information they request to ensure that your child is thriving in their new home, developing on track, and healthy. Post-placements reports are generally required at standard intervals after the child is adopted. With Hope and Love Adoption Agency requires 6 post placement visits.
Adoption Finalization
Adoption finalization is required if your child enters the United States on an IR-4 visa. Please check with your placement agency in order to determine if your child’s adoption needs to be finalized. If so, it is a fairly simple process. Families are able to file their own paperwork or they can hire an attorney to file the paperwork for them.
Your adoption is not legally complete until you have gone through the finalization process. Finalization hearings usually take place within a year of the time the child is placed in the home. Hearings usually last from 30-60 minutes and establish the new legal relationship, and confirm your willingness and ability to provide for your new child.
The court will seek to establish that the child has been placed in a loving, secure home. You should be prepared to present all information included in your adoption petition, and to answer questions about why you want to adopt, how you will care for your child, how your family is and will continue adjusting, and anything else the court feels is relevant.
Re-Adoption
When families adopt a child internationally all of the child’s original paperwork is written in the foreign language with an English translation attached. Some families are concerned that it might be more difficult for other states to recognize that the adoption has been finalized and that they are now the legal parents of the child. Therefore, they choose to re-adopt.
Another reason is that U.S. adoption documents are much more easily replaced than foreign ones if they are lost or destroyed. They are also more recognizable by schools and other organizations to which they may be presented. In addition, re-adoption may make it easier for families to change their children's foreign names and to obtain state birth certificates for them. Some attorneys feel that re-adoption could help to protect a child's inheritance rights.
Re-adoption is the same paper process as an adoption finalization, but is optional if your child’s adoption was finalized overseas. After re-adoption is completed, your child will receive a U.S. Court Decree and an American Birth Certificate.
